Renting a car in Albania
Choose a rental that fits your route, understand the fuel policy, and leave room in your budget for the journey. Start with the total cost, not just the daily rental rate.

Compare the whole rental cost
Start with the dates, pickup location, luggage space and transmission you need. Compare like-for-like quotes: rental price, included mileage, deposit, excess, pickup fees and optional extras. An inexpensive headline rate can represent a different package.
- Check what is included in the displayed total and what is payable at the desk.
- Confirm the name on the booking, driving licence and accepted payment card with the supplier.
- Read the cancellation terms before paying, especially if your itinerary is still flexible.
Understand the fuel policy
Read the policy attached to the specific rental offer. With full-to-full, plan to return the car with the required fuel level and keep your final receipt. Other policies can involve prepaid fuel or refueling charges; ask how unused fuel and service fees are handled.
- Confirm the car’s fuel type at pickup; do not infer it from the vehicle category.
- Record the fuel gauge and the vehicle’s condition at collection and return.
- Leave enough time to refuel near the return location and check station opening hours.
A practical Albania fuel budget
A 500 km trip at 7 L/100 km uses 35 liters of diesel. The example below uses the same dated Albania reference price as our calculator; your car and driving conditions may differ.
35 L × €2.386/L = €83.51

Adjust this 500 km example →Ask about deposits and protection
A deposit, an insurance excess and a protection product are different things. Ask the rental supplier how much will be held, which cards it accepts and when the hold is released. Check exclusions and the claims process of any protection you buy.
- Will additional protection reduce the deposit, or does the original hold still apply?
- Are tyres, glass, keys and roadside assistance included or excluded?
- Which documents and payment card must the main driver show at pickup?
Check your route before crossing a border
A booking in Albania does not by itself confirm permission to drive into another country. Give the supplier your itinerary and ask for written confirmation of permitted destinations, documents, fees and assistance coverage. Ferry travel and one-way returns may have separate conditions.
- List each country you intend to enter, including transit countries.
- Ask whether the vehicle category is permitted on your route and on ferries.
- Confirm whether any road restrictions affect your accommodation or planned excursions.
Leave room in the budget
Fuel is only one part of the journey. Add parking, tolls, ferries and rental extras separately. Use your vehicle’s real consumption where possible and allow for traffic, hills and air conditioning. A cheaper price per liter alone does not justify a long detour.
- Use the calculator for the distances you actually expect to drive in each country.
- Check pump prices locally; country averages cannot identify the cheapest station.
- Revisit your estimate when the trip dates, route or rental vehicle change.
